On behalf of the members of the National SCAN Platform for Sustainable Coffee, the Guatemalan National Coffee Association – Anacafé – announced the launching and presentation of the Platform on Monday 4th March, at 9 a.m. at Anacafé’s Headquarters.
Thanks to international support, diverse institutions with expertise in agricultural technologies and agricultural certifications have joined efforts to support small coffee producers since 2011.
The members of the Platform are Anacafé, Fedecocagua, Rainforest Alliance, Fair Trade Labeling Organizations International, Utz Certified, Fair Trade USA, Solidaridad, Asociation Crecer and Project “Cambio” from the Central American Economic Bank.
Together, they created initiatives to promote environmental, economic and social sustainability in 33 cooperatives in Guatemala, developing and applying training material and technical support to 4,000 coffee producers, in the Departments of Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, Jutiapa, Jalapa, Zacapa, Chiquimula y Santa Rosa.
The special guests at the Platform’s launching included representatives of the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), Committee on Sustainable Assessment (COSA), Sustainable Commodity Assistance Network (SCAN) and McDonald’s USA and McDonald’s Canada as well as certain Guatemalan coffee buyers, interested in knowing more about the quality and varieties of the coffee produced under this innovative program.
